Silver, a Natural Antimicrobial

The medicinal and antimicrobial uses of silver go back to ancient times. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, wrote that silver was beneficial for healing and had anti-disease properties. The Phoenicians stored water and other liquids in silver bottles to prevent bacterial overgrowth. In the early 1900s, before refrigeration, people would place a silver coin in a bottle of milk to prolong the milk's freshness. In that same time period, silver also gained regulatory approval as an antimicrobial agent for medical use to treat a variety of diseases such as tropical sprue, epilepsy, gonorrhea, and even the common cold. Silver was also used as an eyedrop for ophthalmic problems such as gonorrheal conjunctivitis. With the introduction of antibiotics in the 1940s, the use of silver as an antimicrobial agent became less common.

Silver is still used today by medical science. Silver kills bacteria in external wounds, so doctors use wound dressings containing silver sulfadiazine or silver nanomaterial to treat external infections. Wound dressings containing silver are becoming increasingly important due to the recent increase of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as MRSA. Silver is used in medical applications, such as endotracheal breathing tubes and urinary catheters where the silver content is effective in reducing incidences of catheter-related urinary tract infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia. Silver is also used in reconstructive orthopedic surgery, bone prostheses, and cardiac devices, and even on fabrics and surfaces to reduce the spread of infection.

There are many silver products on the market today with varying degrees of quality. Colloidal silver products are inferior to ionic silver products because ionic silver is much more absorbable. Combining fulvic acid with ionic silver produces a superior cutting edge product because fulvic acid makes the cells more permeable and acts as a delivery system to help transport the ions of silver into the cells. Sunwarrior’s Immune Shield combines fulvic acid with ionic silver and provides a more efficient delivery system for silver ions than any other silver product on the planet.
